CAT5133 digitally-programmable potentiometers

Catalyst Semiconductor Inc. expanded its family of digitally-programmable potentiometers with the CAT5133, a 15V, increment/decrement interface, 128-tap (7bit) device designed for calibration and control functions in high-voltage consumer, industrial and medical applications.

According to Catalyst, the potentiometer provides a lower noise alternative to traditional digital potentiometers, which are prone to external environmental noise conditions. Instead of a charge pump, the device has a separate input for an analog supply up to 15V. This provides the high voltage bias needed for the potentiometer terminals and is said to eliminate the noise associated with charge pumps.

The product features on-chip, non-volatile, EEPROM memory, which allows designers to calibrate once, retaining the setting even if power is lost. The wiper position can be preset to any position on the device. On power-up, the wiper will go to the preset position, which is stored in the on-chip EEPROM. Catalyst said that since the CAT5133 is silicon-based, it is insensitive to mechanical vibrations, shock and oxidation.

Some of the product's features include: 128 resistor taps; a power supply of 2.7V to 5.5V; analog voltage supply operation from 8V to 15V; wiper output voltages from 0V to 15V; standby current of less than 15A; and an industrial operating temperature range of -40C to 85C.

The CAT5133 is offered in a RoHS-compliant, "green" 10-pin MSOP package. The ordering code is CAT5133ZI-10-G and pricing for 1,000 piece quantities is 88 cents. Samples and evaluation kits are currently available. Projected lead-times for production quantities are currently 6 to 8 weeks ARO.
