Sony Chemicals Corp. and Sony Miyagi Corp. announced that the two companies will be unified on July 1, 2006 to establish a new company, named Sony Chemical & Information Device Corp.

On May 1, 2006, Sony Corp. established a new internal organization named the Chemical Device Business Group, principally to strengthen chemical component business for LCD TVs. Sony Chemicals and Sony Miyagi are 100 percent subsidiary companies of Sony, and they manufacture various components and execute component business under the supervision of the Chemical Device Business Group.

According to the press release, the engineering resources and technologies of Sony Chemicals and Sony Miyagi will also be unified under the new company. Sony Chemical & Information Device will pursue an integrated operation with the Chemical Device Business Group to establish a strong, efficient and simple business structure for component development, manufacturing and marketing.

The new company will aim to expand its business by merging Sony Chemicals' chemical technologies and Sony Miyagi's material and process technologies that have been fostered through the recording media business, Sony said. It will have a special focus on chemical products such as functional film development. This will lead to expanded applications in LCD panel modules for Sony's BRAVIA LCD TV and low temperature poly-silicon LCD modules.
