Keywords:Chesapeake? network processor? Bay Microsystems?

Bay Microsystems Inc. announced Chesapeake, a 40Gbps programmable network processor that comes with Bay's multimedia traffic management technology. This processor aims to empower networking OEMs to develop broadband infrastructure equipment delivering triple and quadruple play multimedia services.

Chesapeake provides a scalable performance path to 100GbE. The initial version of Chesapeake targets system configurations ranging from high density over-subscribed 1GbE/10GbE Metro Ethernet boxes to high-reliability systems up to 40Gbytes such as: Metro Ethernet aggregation switch/routers; core switches and IP/MPLS routers; triple play and quad play network elements; multi-service switching platforms; IPv6-enabled network elements; MPLS- and PWE3-enabled network elements (LER, LSR); session border controllers; and DSL, wireless, cable and PON aggregation platforms.

Metro Ethernet solutions designed with Chesapeake are being implemented at $40 per GbE port and less than $400 per 10GbE port. Bay is supporting design starts and currently accepting sample orders. Bay also provides a hardware/software tool suite facilitating Chesapeake-based network equipment designs.
