Mitsui Chemicals Inc. (MCI) is set to build a new facility for film-type plasma display panel (PDP) optical filters in anticipation of higher demand. The facility will be built in Nagoya and will be used for mass production and commercial operations.

According to MCI, the demand for PDP will likely increase by 30 percent in 2007. Although glass-type optical filters have been the mainstream for PDPs, many manufacturers are starting to adopt film-type optical filters, which improve picture quality and makes PDPs thinner and lighter. In addition, the market share of film-type optical filters is expected to increase to 40 percent next year, a huge increase from 4 percent in 2004, said MCI.

MCI has begun commercial operations of the filters in its existing facility last April as construction of the new facility is underway.
