Samsung SDI said it would launch active matrix OLED mass production at the beginning of October, three months ahead of the original January 2007 launch date, according to a report by the Korean display market research service Displaybank quoting the Electronic Times.

The Displaybank report quoted Samsung SDI CEO Kim Soon-Taek as strongly supporting an early production launch. In March, the company hatched plans for a $450 million active-matrix OLED plant in Cheonan.

Samsung earlier reported the plant would produce the equivalent of 20 million 2- to 2.6-inch active-matrix OLED displays annually for digital multimedia broadcasting-enabled phones.

The company is expected to use a low-temperature polysilicon base material for its fourth-generation OLED, it reported earlier.
