USB-based modem chipset

Agere Systems Inc.'s SV92U2 is a USB-based modem chipset that is intended to replace the PCI modem in desktop PCs. According to the company, the SV92U2 can reduce desktop computer bus size by 80 percent.

The SV92U2 is offered in three versions. The first is configured as internal modem to replace the PCI modem. A second variation features an external USB dongle model for applications that offer the modem as an option. And the third offering consists of a USB modem, delivered on a half mini-card form factor size for PCs that employ the mini-card architecture.

The SV92U2 chipset, which uses Agere's third-generation silicon DAA, is a soft-modem product for both high-speed (480MHz) and full-speed (12MHz) USB 2.0 applications. This device works with the company's standard soft-modem drivers and supports V.92 and lower rates.

The SV92U2 is available in a 48-pin TQFP package.

Pricing for the SV92U2 modem chip is $4 in quantities of 10,000.
