AdvancedTCA board to run Intel dual-core Xeon processors

Exhibiting powerful network performance and power efficiency, Kontron's AT8020 AdvancedTCA processor board is about to debut. Designed for telecom equipment manufacturers, the AT8020 will feature two dual-core Intel Xeon microprocessors and support for two AdvancedMC (AMC) modules. List price of the board is $5,000.

Kontron;s wares will also use passive heatsinks, and you'll be able to run Red Hat Enterprise Linux V.4 or Wind River Linux operating systems on the platform. Kontron says it will be available by year's end.

The system will be an open modular processing platform that promises to increase the number of deployments of AdvancedTCA platforms at the heart of every compute-intensive mobile-IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) network elementfrom the transcoding of live multimedia mobile content on a MRFP (Multimedia Resource Function Processor) to concurrent processing of subscriber data on home subscriber locator systems.

For mobile networking
Kontron's compute-intensive platform should be appealing for a range of mobile network applications that require high processing power, such transcoding of mobile multimedia content and concurrent processing for HLR systems.

Several vendors of IMS-based network applications have shown preliminary interest in the AT8020. IMS is a standardized so-called Next Generation Networking architecture. It's for telecom operators that want to provide mobile and fixed multimedia services.

IMS uses a VoIP implementation based on a Third Generation Partnership Project standardized implementation of Session Initiation Protocol, and runs over standard IP.

IMS gives network operators and service providers the ability to control and charge for each service. In addition, users have to be able to execute all their services when roaming, as well as from their home networks.

Meets ATCA power requirements
As a Premier Member of the Intel Communications Alliance, Kontron works with Intel to provide dual-core multi-processor products based on the Intel architecture. By using the Intel Xeon processors LV 2.0 GHz, Kontron's AdvancedTCA product can give you expanded I/O and processing performance with low dissipation.

The dual-core Xeon processor is for ultra-dense environments that require lower dissipation. It lets the AT8020 remain within the AdvancedTCA power envelope of 200W.

The AT8020 board will be powered by two Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors LV 2GHz featuring multi-core technology. This will be complemented by 2Mbytes of level-2 cache.

Unique to this board design will be its two mid-size AMC sites for customization, as well as up to 16-Gbytes of DDR 400 Registered ECC SDRAM. The board will also pack a mezzanine switch fabric featuring a cross-switch for SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) and Ethernet.

The AT8020 is also designed with a network timing subsystem for clocking support to integrate with a wide assortment of telecom I/O AMC modules such as T1/E1, OC-3 and others.

The AT8020 will use the Intel E7520 chipset with a 667-MHz FSB (front-side bus) and support for PCI Express. Included will be two rear 10/100/1000-Mbit/s Ethernet interfaces, and a Dual-Dual 1000Base-BX Ethernet option. you also get a serial RJ-45 connector, one USB 2.0 port, and SAS via RTM.
