Are you involved with testing automotive airbag deployment electronics, perhaps climate-control sub-systems, or 42V assemblies? If so, check out this functional tester from Agilent Technologies Inc.

Agilent's TS-5020 tester is a scalable system specifically slated for testing automotive supplemental restraint systems, small body electronics, and HVAC climate-control modules. The TS-5020 can peRForm RF standalone tests, such as remote-keyless-entry (RKE) and tire-pressure-monitoring systems, as well as a combination of low-frequency (AC and DC) and high-frequency RF tests specifically for automotive.

The platform is also compatible with industrial, scientific, medical (ISM) band applications from 100MHz to 3GHz.

Agilent's system uses a mature test-executive software development tool, with more than 400 test routines available. Its mainframe uses Agilent's existing 34980A multi-function switch/measurement unit, with built-in 6-1/2-digit digital multimeter (DMM) and LAN eXtensions for Instrumentation (LXI)-compatible parts.

The 34980A is configured as a 16 x 4 x 16 (16 instrument x four bus x 16-pin) matrix. Modules can be added as needed to expand the system up to 112 pins. The 34980A can also be combined with a 20-channel Form A switch module to heft 3A loads.

A series of optional plug-and-play modules is also available. In addition to basic instruments, the TS-5020 can be combined with optional instruments, including Agilent's N6700 Series module power supply and the company's IEEE-488/General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB) PCI card.

You can also fit the tester with a quad RF multiplexer, an RF switch/attenuator, a 14bit 50MSps function/aribitray waveform generator, and a 225MHz frequency counter (with options to make frequency measurements as high as 12.4GHz).

The TS-5020 runs under Windows XP and Agilent's TS-5000 Series Family Controller. It includes 1024Mbytes of RAM, a DVD-RW drive, a floppy drive, keyboard, 15-inch flat-panel display, and a mouse. Providing greater flexibility and full use of the system, the TS-5020 also offers the option of an express-connect interface connector assembly (ICA).

The ICA is the main interface between the unit under test (UUT) and the system. The ICA mounts to the system rack and includes a a hinged insert that folds away from the tester to provide access to wiring.
