Diodes pack high performance in SOD-523 package

Avago Technologies is supplying four of its high-performance diodes in the smallest package it offers. Targeting miniaturization trends in the mobile handset, RFID tag, wireless LAN, cable TV and direct TV broadcast satellite system markets, each of the three Schottky-barrier diodes (HSMS-282Y, HSMS-285Y, HSMS-286Y) and single PIN (positive-intrinsic-negative) switching diode (HSMP-389) is housed in the SOD-523 package, which measures 1.2-by-0.8-by-.06mm.

The SOD-523 package is compliant to the European Union's Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive that requires the elimination of six banned substances, including lead, from new electrical and electronic equipment starting July 1.

The HSMS-282Y Schottky-barrier diode is optimized for signal detection applications up to 4GHz and for mixing or frequency multiplying applications up to 6GHz. It is suitable as a detector and mixer for mobile handsets, wireless infrastructure, WLAN, WiMAX (IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless access) and cordless phones, where low turn-on voltage and low resistance are key specifications. This device features a low turn-on voltage of 0.34V at 1mA and low dynamic resistance of 12 ohms at 5mA.

The HSMS-285Y is a zero-bias detector diode optimized for use in small signal applications at frequencies below 1.5GHz. It is suitable for RFID tags where primary DC-biased power is not available. It combines high-detection sensitivity of up to 50mV/uW at 915MHz with low flicker noise of -162dBV/Hz at 100MHz.

Optimized for use as a large signal detector, as well as for modulating, signal converting and voltage doubling applications up to 6GHz, where large signal detection is most critical, the HSMS-286Y can be used in RFID and RF tag readers, and direct broadcast satellite (DBS) low noise block downconverters. It features high-detection sensitivity: 50mV/uW at 915MHz, 35mV/uW at 2.45GHz, and 25mV/uW at 5.80GHz.

The HSMP-389Y is a PIN (positive-intrinsic-negative) diode optimized for switching applications up to 3GHz where low insertion loss, low series resistance at low current and low capacitance are required. Applications include wireless infrastructure, cable television (CATV), mobile handsets, cordless phones, WLAN and WiMAX cards and access points. The low insertion loss and series resistance is rated at 100MHz, with a typical RS of 3.8 ohms at 1mA, 1.8 ohms at 5mA, and 1.5 ohms at 10mA. Other key specifications include a low total capacitance of 1MHz, a CT of 0.20pF typical with a VR of 5V.

The HSMS-282Y is priced at 14 cents in quantities of 180,000; the HSMS-285Y at 24 cents in quantities of 100,000; the HSMS-286Y at 19 cents in quantities of 130,000, and the HSMP-389Y at 14 cents in quantities of 180,000. All versions are available in 100-piece bulk packs and 3,000 pieces on 7-inch tape-and-reel. Samples and production quantities are available.
