PCF gaskets improve LCD cushion, EMI shield

Laird Technologies has introduced new cost-effective PORON Conductive Fabric (PCF) gaskets for LCD cushioning and EMI protection in handheld monitoring devices.

The gaskets are RoHS-compliant EMI shields comprised of Rogers PORON and the company's own fabric and conductive adhesive. Laird said this combination creates an atmosphere favorable to LCD cushioning and EMI security for mobile phones, PDAs, GPS receivers, barcode scanners and graphic tablets.

"By providing both cushioning and EMI protection, Laird Technologies' PORON Conductive Fabric gaskets reduce the number of needed parts," said Joe Chen, global product director, Laird Technologies. "They also eliminate the need for a high-cost stamping tool that traditionally slows down production lines. The PCF gaskets help decrease customers' time-to-market while lowering costs, all while answering the requirements of the industry."

According to the company, the PCF design also reduces the weight of handheld products since it replaces the conventional metal stamping frame. PCF gaskets can be die-cut specifically to fit underneath the LCD screen in handheld devices. Likewise, standard roll sizes are 500mm wide by 50m in length. PCF gaskets are obtainable now at an average cost of 10 cents for a 3-by-3cm die-cut part. Other sizes are available.
