Seiko Epson Corp. (Epson) has announced the development of the new S1D19501 series of driver ICs for 176 x 220-dot TFT LCDs, the mainstream display for mobile phones.

Epson said the new product series is a line-up of one-chip drivers for amorphous Si-TFT LCDs embedded with display data RAM (176-by-220-by-18 bit) and capable of displaying 262K colors. By embedding a 220-output gate driver and 176 (RGB)-output source driver, as well as the power circuits needed for display onto one chip, it has become possible for a single chip to display a TFT color panel module of a maximum of 176 (RBG) x 220 dots, explained the company.

As a one-chip TFT driver capable of this level of resolution, the S1D19501 series, which uses a 0.13m process, is Epson's third-generation of driver products, following the S1D19105 series (176-by-220-by-18 bit) fabricated using the 0.25m process and the S1D19121 series (176-by-220-by-18 bit) using the 0.18m process. As the S1D19501 inherits basic specifications and commands of the existing Epson TFT drivers, the new device promises smooth replacement.

Furthermore, as a result of employing the super slim technology of the 0.13m process, Epson said the short side of the chip has been reduced to approximately 1mm, which is 34 percent that of conventional products.

Shipment of engineering samples has already begun.
