Skyworks Solutions Inc. has introduced a new direct quadrature demodulator with integrated LNA for the 5GHz band, delivering new levels of integration and performance for standard products in this spectrum. Given its simplified design, this solution facilitates access to various broadband applications in a low-cost approach, Skyworks said.

According to the company, the demodulator provides the flexibility to design receivers for various licensed and unlicensed broadband wireless data systems using low-cost and low-power direct conversion architecture. In addition, it is a suitable RF solution for the unlicensed WiMAX market, dedicated short range communications, 802.11, 5.8GHz industrial and medical RFID readers, and proprietary wireless data links.

"Our [new direct demodulator] enables broadband wireless data innovators to easily adapt to the industry's requirements for 5GHz, while at the same time providing us the opportunity to serve new markets," said Sean Martin, senior marketing director for linear products at Skyworks.

The SKY73013 offers quadrature accuracy performance, noise figure and linearity specifications, including 64-QAM OFDM. The internal "no-pull" architecture offsets the voltage-controlled oscillator from the carrier frequency by a factor of 3 to 2. This architecture eliminates LO pulling and dynamic DC offset issues.

The direct demodulator operates at 4.9-5.925GHz (at an LO range of 3.2-3.9GHz), has a 6dB noise figure, and an input 1dB compression point of -15dBm. The SKY73013 operates at 3.3V at a low current consumption of 35mA, over a temperature range of -40C to 85C in a 4-by-4 quad flat no lead (QFN) package.

The SKY73013 is currently available for sampling.
