Philips announced the launch of China's near field communication (NFC) trial together with Nokia, China Mobile's Xiamen Office and Xiamen e-Tong Card. A hundred participants have been selected to use a Nokia 3220 cellphone to conduct electronic payments in restaurants, transportation systems, movie theaters or convenience stores that accept the e-Tong card.

According to a recent report released by the Ministry of Information Industry, the number of mobile phone subscribers in China exceeded 377 million as of September 2005. Among the emerging mobile applications, payment via mobile phone is said to be the most popular among consumers.

In addition to the secure mobile payment functionality possible with NFC in the trial, subscribers can check the balance of their e-Tong cards as well as the last nine transactions made via their handset to track their spending. Through a built-in WAP site, users are able to search lists of stores that accept payment using the e-Tong card.
