The total market for discrete semiconductor components in India is set to be $290 million in 2006, up 23.4 percent above the $235 million of discretes sold in India in 2005, according to Frost & Sullivan, a market research company.

Frost & Sullivan defines discretes to include diodes, transistors, thyristors and optoelectronic semiconductors and said more than a dozen vendors are jostling for marketshare, along with Indian companies such as Bharat Electronics and CDIL. Imports from China and Taiwan as well as with Philips, STMicroelectronics and Agilent Technologies are in the market, it said.

Uninterruptible power supplies, inverters, TV sets and computer monitors, electronic energy meters and set-top boxes are driving sales of discretes. However, a shift from analog to digital is one factor negatively affecting the usage of discretes in India, the report said.

About 6.3 billion units will be used in India this year, of which power transistors are expected to account for 227 million, optoelectronics semiconductors for 78 million and all other discretes will account for another 6 billion.
