Buck regulator offers four output-voltage options

Semtech Corp.'s SC194A 1-amp DC/DC buck regulator provides a digitally programmable 1-1.8V output for portable applications.

"The SC194A gives portable device designers a new option for the critical power regulation functionone that fits into designs where board space is limited and flexibility and efficiency are required," said Ven Shan, vice president of marketing for the Power Management Group. "The SC194A builds on Semtech's buck regulator family by adding high-current operation to our family of specialty power regulation solutions that are ideal for portable systems."

The device, working from a 2.7-5.5V output, has two pins to allow the user to program a 1-, 1.2-, 1.5- or 1.8V output. These pins can be hard-wired, or they can be tied to a microcontroller and dynamically switched for applications that use digital power control. The SC194A features up to 93 percent maximum efficiency at 1.8V output over a broad operating range.

The chip's automatic power save mode (PSAVE) employs pulse frequency modulation at light loads to maintain high efficiency. While in PSAVE mode, the device's quiescent current is just 17A. PSAVE mode operation is monitored such that the device automatically detects when to disable this operation; alternatively, the user can manually take the chip out of PSAVE by toggling a single control pin. Users can select the chip's internal 1MHz fixed clock or connect the device to an external oscillator between 750kHz and 1.25MHz for applications requiring a different frequency or clock synchronization.

The chip includes an internal compensation network, integrated switching FETs and eliminates the need for an external Schottky diode. Only three discrete components are required. The SC194A has built-in soft-start, short-circuit, over-voltage and over-temperature protection features. The chip features fast transient response to protect sensitive loads from extensive supply voltage variations.
