Avago Technologies offers a higher resolution option for the AEDR-8300 series of reflective optical encoders. The AEDR-8300-1Wx offers 212 lines per inch (LPI) and a higher maximum count frequency at 60KHz. These performance characteristics make it suitable for consumer and office products such as scanners, printers, refrigerators, washing machines, industrial sewing machines and miniature motors.

Supplied in a Pb-free, RoHS-compliant package, the surface-mount AEDR 8300-1Wx reflective optical encoder measures 5.12-by-3.96-by-1.63mm. It provides a two-channel quadrature output with a resolution of 212 LPI or 8.35 lines per millimeter and a count frequency up to 60KHz. The count frequency is higher than Avago's other miniature surface-mount reflective optical encoders, which allows the encoder to operate with higher speed motors. It operates from a single 3.3-5V supply. The single voltage supply draws 18.9mA (including 15mA LED current) at 3.3V, typical.

The AEDR-8300 series is also available in resolution options of 36-, 75-, 150- and 180 LPI supporting a 5V supply with a maximum count frequency of 30KHz. The series consists of an LED light source, a special photodetector IC with integrated electronics, and integrated optics. It can be used with a reflective code wheel to sense rotary position and velocity, or with a linear code strip to sense linear position and velocity.

The optical encoder provides two-channel digital outputs in quadrature, which offers both count and direction information. It is insensitive to axial play and maintains performance and accuracy over a wide variation in the gap between sensor and code wheel or strip, said the company.

Avago also offers the AEDR-8400 encoders, AEDA-3300 series encoders, and AEDR-8000 series encoders. Click the link for additional information about Avago's optical encoders.

The AEDR-8300 reflective optical encoder is priced at $2.28 each in quantities of 50,000.
