Fabless MCU provider Luminary Micro and U.K.-based Rowley Associates have announced the availability of CrossFire LM3S102 evaluation kit for the Stellaris LM3S102 Cortex-M3 microcontroller.

Luminary Micro introduced the Stellaris LM3S102 and its flagship "ARM-for-$1" LM3S101 early this year as the world's first silicon implementation of the Cortex-M3 processor. The Rowley Crossfire LM3S102 is said to be the first evaluation kit developed and made available for a Cortex-M3 MCU.

The evaluation kit contains all necessary components to evaluate the Stellaris LM3S102 microcontroller. It is bundled with the Stellaris LM3S102, the CrossFire LM3S102 evaluation board, a mini-USB cable, a Getting Started manual, and a license for Rowley's CrossWorks for ARM software development tools (locked to the board).

"The features of the CrossFire LM3S102 evaluation kit make it simple and easy to evaluate our Stellaris microcontrollers," said Luminary Micro's chief marketing officer Jean Anne Booth. "With the first ARM Cortex-M3 microcontrollers on the market, and with the first ARM-based microcontrollers that provide 32bit performance for the same price as an 8- or 16bit, we have had several requests for this type of evaluation board and we think it is going to be very popular among Stellaris enthusiasts."

Paul Curtis, director of Rowley Associates, shared that current users of 32bit MCUs will be impressed with the Thumb-2 instruction set of the Cortex-M3, balancing critical code density and performance; while 8- and 16bit users can painlessly migrate to 32bit with no price penalty. "This kit is ideal for both serious and fun applications, particularly with its attractive price point," Curtis said.

The CrossFire LM3S102 evaluation kit is currently shipping.
