USM module with 15 counter/timers

Event counting, frequency measurement, pulse counting, pulse-width modulation, position measurement and pulse generation are just a few sub-system elements that can be implemented with a timer/counter circuit. If you need counter/timer functions like these, check out the new USB module from board maker ACCES I/O Products Inc.

The Model USB-CTR-15 is available as either a $199 PC/104-sized (3.55-by-3.775 inches) board, or as a $249 packaged OEM module. The ruggedized steel industrial enclosure measures 4-by-4-by-1.25 inches. The enclosure is powder-coated and includes an anti-skid bottom.

What makes the OEM option unique is that its board size and pre-drilled mounting holes match the PC/104 form-factor (without the bus connections). This ensures ready installation using standard standoffs inside most enclosures or systems.

A Model USB-CTR-15 can be integrated into any PC/104 or PCI-104 stack. You can use it with embedded form-factors such as Embedded Board eXpandable and Ampro EPIC.

Regardless of packaging, this USB 2.0 device can add portable and easy-to-install counter/timer capabilities to any PC or embedded system with a USB port. The unit is also compatible with USB 1.1.

The USB-CTR-15 features 15 independent 16bit counter/timers. Clock, gate and output signals from all 15 channels are buffered and accessed via one connector.

As a USB peripheral, this module is also plug-and-play, supporting quick connect/disconnect whenever you need additional counter/timer devices. It features five fully un-dedicated industry-standard 82C54 counter/timer chips. Each provides three independent software programmable 16bit counters. The maximum allowable input frequency is 10MHz.

I/O wiring connections are made using an industry-standard 50-pin insulation displacement connector, or via a removable screw-terminal adapter board. A User Configuration Adapter board is also provided to assist in wiring the counters together. An OEM version of the USB-CTR-15 is a board-only product, sans enclosure or external screw terminal board.

For most operating systems
The USB-CTR-15 is supported for use in most operating systems. It includes a free Linux (including Mac OS X), and Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP software package. The package contains sample programs and source code in Visual Basic, Delphi, C++ Builder, and Visual C++ for Windows. Embedded OS support includes Windows XPe.

Also incorporated is a graphical setup program in Windows. Third-party support includes a Windows standard DLL interface. The DLL interface is usable from most popular application programs, and includes example National Instruments LabVIEW virtual instruments.

ACCES I/O Products can also support design-in with a range of analog, digital, serial communication, and isolated I/O boards. The company also offers systems integration services and enclosures, promising quick turn-around on custom projects, including software.
