Toshiba audio power amp gives 21W per channel

Toshiba America's first Class-D audio power amplifier IC, the TB2924FG, delivers up to 21W per channel in a heatsink-free design for audio consumer electronics applications, including TV, home audio, and portable audio applications.

"The TB2924FG offers a compelling solution for a wide range of audio power applications with its single power supply design, surface-mount package and high-efficiency operation for up to 21W-by-2 bridge-tied load (BTL) channels," said David Cruikshank, business development manager for digital consumer products in the ASSP Business Unit. "This new device will enable the creation of smaller, lighter and/or more powerful end products."

Complementing the company's AB-class amplifiers, the TB2924FG, in BiCD (bipolar, complementary metal oxide semiconductor and double-diffused metal oxide semiconductor) technology, delivers up to 21W into 8 ohms without a heatsink for Vcc 20 and 10 percent total harmonic distortion (THD). It delivers 19.5W per channel at 4 ohms and Vcc = 15, and 10.5W per channel at 8 ohms and Vcc = 15 with 88 percent efficiency.

The chip also features built-in standby and muting switching functions, and built-in master and slave oscillator control (200kHz, typical), which allows multiple units to be used together. Standby current is typically 0.2mA. The IC also includes protection against output short-circuits and thermal overstress conditions, and a thermal automatic gain control (AGC) feature.

The TB2924FG, in a HSOP36 package and available in tape and reel, is in volume production. It's priced at $2 each in 1,000-piece quantities. For qualified users, the company offers an evaluation board and a reference design with Gerber data.
