Shortage of 17inch LCD monitor panels seen next month

Supply of 17inch LCD monitor panels is forecasted to experience a shortage in the middle of August, according to industry sources.

Panel makers, including Beijing BOE Optoelectronics Technology Co. Ltd (BOE OT), Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO), HannStar Display Corp. and Quanta Display Inc., have decreased their output of their 17inch LCD monitor panels last month. Instead, makers are focusing on 19inch and larger panels, as prices of 17inch panels declined below production costs.

What does LCD stand for?
A display technology that uses rod-shaped molecules (that flow like liquid and bend light. Unenergized, the crystals direct light through two polarizing filters, showing a natural background color. When energized, the crystals redirect the light to be absorbed in one of the polarizers, causing the dark appearance of crossed polarizers to show. The contrast and viewing angle improve as the molecules are twisted further.
