Texas Instruments Inc. (TI), a mainstay in India for the past 20 years, disclosed that it will set up a second R&D center in Chennai.

The new center will work on technologies spanning TI's entire product portfolio, but will focus specifically on India's booming wireless phone market.

The announcement came during a meeting between Gilles Delfassy, TI's senior vice president, and India officials meeting in New Delhi, according to a Press Trust of India report. The Dallas-based chip maker has nearly 1,500 staffers at its R&D center here.

"We are escalating our existing wireless design presence in recognition of the importance of India to the global wireless market," Delfassy said.

TI wants to boost wireless penetration in emerging markets like India with low-cost handsets based on its family of single-chip mobile phone devices expected to hit this market later this year.
