South Korea's overseas shipments of its information technology products are expected to grow nearly 10 percent over 2005, despite the strong Korean won, fierce competition and high oil prices, a government report said this week (July 12).

The Ministry of Information and Communication forecasts the country's IT exports will reach $112.4 billion in 2006, up 9.8 percent over $102.3 billion of 2005, when exports rose 9.2 percent.

This year's growth will be led by the semiconductor and display panel segments, the ministry said.

Semiconductors will rise 12.3 percent to $35.94 billion this year, from $32 billion in 2005, due to increasing demand from major chip consumers including the mobile phone and digital home appliance sectors, the ministry said.

Domestic display panel makers' efforts to respond to customers' call for a high-resolution TVs and the fast-growing global digital broadcasting market will boost exports by 61.4 percent, from $10.17 billion in 2005 to $16.42 billion this year.

The ministry said digital TV and mobile phone will also contribute to export growth. Digital TV exports will reach $6.46 billion, up 9.0 percent over last year's $5.92 billion, while mobile phones will reach $26.06 billion, up 2.7 percent over $25.37 billion in 2005.

However, exports of personal computers and monitors will decline 12.5 percent to $380 million and 8.0 percent to $5.82 billion, respectively.
