DC/DC regulator touts 97 percent efficiency

Texas Instruments' 1.5A DC/DC step-down regulator, which boasts an efficiency of 97 percent, is designed to help extend battery life in 2-cell alkaline or NiMH powered electronics, such as portable media players.

The TPS62510, working from a 1.8- to 3.8V input, is suited for regulating the point-of-load power supply from a fixed 3.3-, 2.5- or 1.8V input voltage. The TPS62510 operates in a 1.5MHz fixed-frequency, pulse width modulation (PWM) mode, or in a high-efficiency mode at nominal load current.

For increased power savings, the device automatically enters a power save mode at light load currents. The TPS62510 also achieves maximum system reliability with an output voltage tracking feature that provides sequencing and allows the output voltage to track to an applied external voltage.

The TPS62510 converter, in a 10-pin, 3-by-3mm QFN package, is priced at $2.35 in 1,000 quantities. For applications that require additional power dissipation, the DDPAK package is available.
