Buoyed by growing profits over the last two quarters, six-year-old optical networking company Tejas Networks is focusing on access/Edge products.

Among the first companies to ship products based on Ethernet-over-SDH standards, Tejas now wants to build on its next-generation SDH/SONET technology capabilities to move to packet-aware optical transport products.

Tejas credits its survival to its focus on access/Edge products while others focused on higher capacity backbones (over 10Gbits). Averaging a launch every nine months, the company also markets products under its own name in India while overseas products are sold by carriers under their own names.

"We see an opportunity to invest and expand aggressively into international markets and broaden our product and technology portfolio. We want more investments soon," said Sanjay Nayak, CEO and managing director of Tejas Networks India while declining to elaborate on a specific total.

The company has raised $29 million in funding so far, including investments from Intel Capital and Gururaj Deshpande, chairman of Sycamore Networks Inc., who also serves as chairman of Tejas.
