LG taps Infineon platform for EDGE cellphones

Infineon Technologies AG announced that LG Electronics Inc. (LGE) has chosen Infineon's MP-E platform for its new EDGE cellphones. The Infineon platform, provided as a reference design, includes a baseband processor, RF transceiver for four frequency ranges, power management circuitry, Bluetooth chips and an EDGE phone software suite.

According to market research company Strategy Analytics, LGE reached a global market share of 6.9 percent in Q1 2006, with an increase in shipments year-over-year of 40.5 percent. The company also said the number of EDGE cellphones will grow from about 77 million last year to more than 500 million in 2009. Within the next three years, almost every second cellphone will be an EDGE device.

Some of the features supported by the MP-E platform are GSM/GPRS/EDGE, quad band RF bands 850/900/1,800/1,900MHz, video playback and recording (MPEG4, H.263), video streaming, camera support, MP3, Bluetooth, Infrared and USB 2.0.
