Power inductors target notebook LCD panels

Taiyo Yuden Inc. announced it is offering the NR6012 series of low-profile (6-by-6-by-1.2mm) power inductors for DC/DC converter choke coil applications in LCD panels for notebook PCs.

Available in 11 models, the NR6012 wirewound inductor series offers a broad selection of low DC resistance from 0.092- to 2.18 ohms and high inductance ratings from 3- to 100H. The company also touts the industry's highest current rating at 1730mA for the 6-by-6mm device form factor.

A key challenge Taiyo Yuden faced in developing these inductors for notebook PC applications is LCD power circuits that require DC/DC converters with high current handling capability and a stable DC voltage supply. In addition, the company said the demand for lower-profile mobile equipment is driving a corresponding need for choke coils, the main component in DC/DC converters, with higher current capacity and a lower physical profile. However, boosting current capability necessitates increasing the size of the core and thickening the lead wire inside the inductor, both of which make reducing the size and profile of the device very difficult, explained the company.

In order to achieve the lowest possible DC resistance, the company developed a unique sleeveless square-core winding that eliminates all wasted space and thickens the lead wire inside the inductor instead of using a traditional round drum/sleeve core technology. In addition, the use of a special ferrite-based resin covering further reduces the component size and enables the industry's highest available current rating of 1A at 10H inductance, according to the company.
