In 2011, mobile TV services will have some 514 million subscribers worldwide, up from only 6.4 million at the end of last year, according to a recent ABI Research study. But just a little over a year ago, analysts were unsure how consumers will welcome mobile TV. Today, everyone agrees that it would be the "killer application" for cellphones and other portable devices.

Here in Asia, there seems to be a flurry of activities related to mobile TV. South Korea's LG Electronics and Samsung have already released mobile phones that comply with the DVB-H standard, while Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs has thrown its weight behind cooperation among TV stations, telecom operators, handset manufacturers, IC vendors and equipment manufacturers.

However, before any industry player can take advantage of the forecasted 514 million subscribers, design engineers must first address various mobile TV issues, including the many standards vying for space, the requirements to keep power consumption down, and the need to design in or write embedded software for multi-processor SoCs into handsets.

These and other mobile TV challenges will be tackled at next month's 6th Annual Embedded Systems Conference-Taiwan (ESC-Taiwan). The Designing TV-on-the-Go Summit will feature key executives from Philips Semiconductors, Imagination Technologies, Frontier Silicon and MontaVista Software Inc.

Joey Chan, Greater China marketing manager for Philips, will discuss key technologies for addressing power consumption and picture quality while driving and meeting various standards.

Imagination's Taiwan Sales Director Maxwell Lin will discuss how an IP platform, based on Software-Defined Radio technology, can support multiple standards (DVB-H, T-DMB and 1-seg ISDB-T) in one core, using minimal silicon area.

Alex Sin, Frontier Silicon's director for business development, will share his views on making mobile TV a reality from a silicon vendor's perspective. Sin will also be sharing Frontier Silicon's experience on implementing T-DMB in their products.

The presentation of Paxton Cooper, the director of product marketing for MontaVista, will explore key mobile multimedia requirements, the ability of various embedded platforms to address these requirements, and specifically, the fit for Linux as a platform for mobile TV development.

ESC-Taiwan, formerly known as ESC-Asia, is part of the Embedded Systems Conferences series, which is the world's largest event for embedded systems developers. To be held on August 18-19, it will be collocated with the EDA & Test-Taiwan Conference & Exhibition (EDA&T-Taiwan).
