Active x2 frequency multipliers support circuits to 46GHz

Suitable for driving in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) stages and balanced mixers, Hittite Microwave Corp.'s seven active x2 frequency multipliers can let your circuits achieve continuous output frequency coverage from 5GHz to 46GHz. Each of these multipliers ensures fundamental frequency and sub-harmonic suppression.

All are based on GaAs pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor (PHEMT) device technologies.

Hittite's HMC576 (priced at about $23), HMC578 and HMC579 active x2 multipliers are offered in bare die form. They comprise an input amplifier, a low conversion-loss frequency doubler and an output buffer amplifier.

They operate with an input drive level of 3dBm (2mW) and provide between 12dBm (16mW) and 16dBm (40mW) of output power. By using these three multipliers, you can achieve continuous output frequency coverage from 18GHz to 46GHz.

For applications where an SMT RoHS-compatible package is required, HMC575LP4, HMC576LC3B, HMC577LC4 and HMC578LC3B (priced at about $25) active x2 multipliers provide output frequencies from 5GHz to 33GHz.

They exhibit output power capability ranging from 12dBm (16mW) to 21dBm (125mW). That enables them to directly drive many of the company's doubly-balanced mixers and I/Q monolithic microwave IC mixers.

The HMC578LC3B, for example, can drive the local oscillator port of HMC560LM3; it's a 24GHz to 40GHz double-balanced mixer.

The HMC578LC3B also provides several dB of output power margin, giving you the option of placing a bandpass filter between the two components if required. The extra margin can make up for filter loss.
