DC/DC controller targets N-channel MOSFETs

Linear Technology Corp. announced it is offering a low input voltage, synchronous step-down DC/DC controller for N-channel MOSFETs. The company said the LTC3822 has a constant frequency-current mode architecture with MOSFET VDS sensing that eliminates the need for sense resistors, reduces solution cost and improves efficiency.

Running on 2.75-4.5V, the device has a maximum duty cycle of 99 percent that provides low dropout operation. The switching frequency can be programmed for ranges of 300-750kHz, allowing the use of small surface-mount inductors and capacitors. Applications include point-of-load conversion from 3.3VIN and portable devices with single Li-ion batteries for up to 20A load current requirements.

The LTC3822 promises line and load regulation and fast transient response with its constant frequency current mode operation. Internal soft-start circuitry guarantees controlled startup to minimize inrush current and ensure proper regulation, Linear said. The LTC3822 consumes 340A during operation and 7.5A in shutdown.

The LTC3822 is available in thermally enhanced 3-by-3mm DFN and 10-lead MSOP packages. Rated for operations at ranges of -400C to 850C, the device has 1,000-piece pricing set at $2.10 each.
