Communications-IC supplier Marvell Technology Group Ltd broke ground on its new Asia-Pacific headquarters in Singapore in a move the firm said would better allow it to serve its expanding roster of regional clients.

When the 10,000-square-meter facility in Paya Lebar industrial park is completed in mid-2008, it will house a wide range of functions, including IC assembly and test, a "cutting-edge" technology design center and sales and technical support, Marvell said in a statement.

Marvell plans to staff the headquarters with more than 300 new IC designers and test and assembly engineers over the next five years, bringing its total head count in Singapore to over 500.

President and CEO Sehat Sutardia said Marvell's decision to locate the facility in Singapore was an acknowledgement of Asia's growing importance to the firm. "Asia- Pacific is increasingly becoming a strategic investment region for Marvell due to our growing customer base and outsourcing partners here," he said.

The company also saw Singapore as a "natural choice" due to its world-class infrastructure and abundance of research institutes, which are expected to provide a "talent pool" that will feed Marvell's design activities, Marvell said.

Recently, Intel Corp. has agreed to sell its communications and application processor units to Marvell, a storage, communications and chip developer, for $600 million.
