MagnaChip Semiconductor Ltd recently announced that it developed and started mass production of a TFT LCD one-chip solution (MC2TA6201) using amorphous silicon (a-Si).

The new solution supports the QQVGA (128x128) resolution and 65,000 colors. With minimal power consumption, the company said the device supports MPU interface at 68/80 modes and RGB interface from 6bit to 16bit.

This chipset targets sub-displays of mobile phones and MP3 player displays. MagnaChip said a-Si TFT LCD offers superior image quality versus STN LCD and the company is targeting to replace STN LCD drivers with this new offering.

"STN LCD accounts for about 80 percent of LCD driver chips used for mobile phone sub-displays currently, whereas a-Si TFT LCD represents only approximately 4 percent of the total market," said Davis Mok, VP of marketing at MagnaChip's Display Solutions Division. "As our product offers superior image quality and cost competitiveness, and is produced at our proprietary manufacturing facilities, we expect it to rapidly replace the STN market."
