Worldwide silicon wafer area shipments increased 4 percent sequentially during the second quarter, according to analysis from Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI)'s Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG).

Total silicon wafer area shipments were 1,966 million square inches during the second quarter, up from 1,884 million square inches shipped during the previous quarter. The new quarterly total area shipments are about 22 percent above second quarter 2005 shipments, SEMI said.

"Silicon wafer shipments continue to remain strong for all wafer sizes during the second quarter," said Tatsuhiko Shigematsu, chairman SEMI SMG and technology officer of Sumco Corp. "Continuing demand for semiconductors is driving strong growth for silicon wafers."

According to SMG's analysis, second quarter wafer shipments included 1,452 million square inches of polished silicon, 452 million square inches of epitaxial silicon and 62 million square inches of non-polished silicon. The numbers were up both sequentially and year-to-year except for non-polished silicon, which was down sequentially from 63 million square inches in the first quarter, according to SMG.
