Royal Philips announced that Samsung Electronics has launched what is touted as the world's first Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) WLAN handset, the SGH-P200, incorporating Philips Nexperia cellular system solution 6120.

According to Kwang Suk Hyun, senior vice president, overseas alliance group, Samsung, the Nexperia cellular system solution 6120 from Philips was selected because of its power efficient design, improved coverage on wireless and cellular networks, enhanced quality of service running multiple applications and ease of use with minimal intervention. "Consumers are looking to fixed-mobile convergence to reduce phone bills and Samsung has invested huge R&D resources to meet consumer demand," he said.

Philips' Nexperia cellular system solution 6120 uses BGW211, a low-power 802.11g WLAN system-in-package that integrates the baseband/MAC, radio, power amplifier and all necessary front-end components to complete the solution. The support of enhanced Wi-Fi features like Unscheduled Power Save Delivery allows UMA talk time of over nine hours.
