MCUs with embedded flash suit automotive body, safety apps

NEC Electronics America Inc. has announced a new line of 8bit and 32bit microcontrollers based on the company's 0.15m process technology and featuring embedded flash memory optimized for automotive body and safety control applications.

Featuring pin counts ranging from 44 to 176, and flash memory configurations ranging from 32Kbytes to 1Mbyte, the new line is composed of 29 MCUs: 13 based on the 8bit 78K0 CPU core and 16 based on the 32bit V850ES CPU core. All devices support the controller area network and local interconnect network protocols, NEC said.

Products in both the 78K0/Fx2 and V850ES/Fx3 series are pin-compatible with NEC Electronics' previous-generation 78K0/Fx1+ and V850ES/Fx2 MCUs.

"To implement better functionality, OEMs and tier-one system suppliers require application-specific semiconductor solutions that integrate special functionality optimized for body and safety applications to help reduce system cost and development time," said Jim Trent, associate VP and general manager, automotive strategic business unit at NEC Electronics America. "These new expanded-feature MCUs from NEC Electronics are well positioned to meet these high-level customer requirements."

Samples of 78K0/Fx2 series MCUs are available today with volume production scheduled for October while samples of V850ES/Fx3 series MCUs are scheduled to be available in the coming months, with volume production scheduled in December. Pricing information was not disclosed.
