Microsoft Corp. is considering to offer discounts to entice consumers to upgrade their PCs with Windows Vista, even though the new OS isn't due for release until next year, according to an AP report.

Vista will be the first major upgrade to Microsoft's OS since Windows XP was released five years ago. Prior to the announcement of the Vista name on July 2005, it was known by its codename Longhorn.

Early this month, research firm Gartner Inc. reiterated an earlier forecast that Microsoft won't be able to meet the November corporate deadline. Microsoft has stated the scheduled release dates for Windows Vista as November 2006 for business editions, and January 2007 for consumer editions.

"While Microsoft is certainly making progress, I don't expect to see a finished product in November," research vice president Steve Kleynhans said in an online brief posted on Gartner's website.
