?SerDes upgrade offers more ESD protection

New ?SerDes device from Fairchild

Fairchild Semiconductor has introduced key enhancements to its ?SerDes technology. Using the same footprint and base architecture as the FIN24AC, the new FIN224AC promises enhanced ESD protection and reduced EMI.

As with any handheld electronic equipment, damage from ESD is a primary concern. Fairchild said it has addressed this challenge by increasing ESD protection from 8kV in the FIN24AC to 15kV in the FIN224AC. Another enhancement is the implementation of rolled edge rates of the LVTTL outputs to further reduce EMI. This is particularly advantageous in cellphones and other wireless applications where minimizing noise is crucial, the company said.

The ?SerDes products use patented low-power, low-EMI CTL technology to reduce 24 or 12 parallel LVTTL signals typically required in ultra-portables to a single differential serial signal. This reduces the number of wires in an application, Fairchild aid, simplifying the design and saving space while also removing problematic electromagnetic radiation from wide, high-speed data paths.

"Fairchild has worked closely with our customers to refine our ?SerDes technology and produce a device that addresses all their concerns while simplifying converging technologies into even smaller, thinner applications," says Chris Ferland, Fairchild's ?SerDes marketing manager. "The FIN224AC fulfills an important need in portable applications."

Fairchild said ?SerDes devices simplify designs with high-resolution HVGA displays and multimegapixel cameras. In many designs, this approach also lowers the total solution cost by reducing connector and flex cable requirements and by eliminating the need for EMI shielding and filters, the company added.

The FIN224AC is a Pb-free device that meets or exceeds the requirements of the joint ICP/JEDEC standard J-STD-020C and is compliant with EU regulations.

The device is available in BGA priced at $1.74 each and MLP priced $1.68 each, both at 1,000-piece quantities. Delivery is four weeks ARO.
