China's Huawei Technologies has risen to the No. 3 position in the worldwide share of the carrier Ethernet switch/router (CESR) market, according to a recent report from Heavy Reading, the research division of Light Reading Inc.

The telecommunications network company's quarter-over-quarter sales growth in Q2 is estimated at more than 50 percent. Heavy Reading's CESR quarterly market report listed Huawei's quarterly market share at 7 percent in Q2, an increase of two percentage points. This compares to market shares of 53 percent for Cisco, 19 percent for Alcatel and 5 percent for Lucent in the same quarter. Looking at market share on a rolling four-quarter basis, said Heavy Reading, Lucent managed to maintain a slight edge over Huawei and hold onto the No. 3 share position.

"We have seen a tremendous amount of vendor activity in the CESR market over the past year, particularly as larger vendors such as Huawei and Siemens have entered the fray," said Stan Hubbard, senior analyst at Heavy Reading and author of the CESR market report. "It is increasingly clear that the vendors who either own end-to-end carrier Ethernet and IP/MPLS portfolios or have partnered with other players to offer comprehensive solutions are in the best position to gain and hold market share."
