Toshiba has confirmed it is considering overseas sites for fab 5, its next NAND wafer fab, according to a Reuters report.

Toshiba, which works in close cooperation with SanDisk Corp. on NAND flash memory, began work on Fab 4 at Yokkaichi, Japan, in July 2006 through a joint venture company called Flash Alliance Ltd. The 300mm fab is expected to produce 100,000 wafers a month at maximum production and is slated to begin operating in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Meanwhile rumors had circulated about whether Fab 5 would be constructed in Iwate in northern Japan or Oita of western Japan.

"There are factors we feel we must consider in favor of building the site overseas," Reuters quoted Toshiba Corporate Vice President Shozo Saito saying to a symposium in Tokyo. "The incentives are very good, and the proportion of engineers is good," the report also quoted Saito saying.

The obvious locations for Toshiba's Fab 5 would be in Southeast Asia, most likely in Taiwan. However, Toshiba is not expected to announce the Fab 5 location until sometime in 2007. Toshiba is not expected to reach full manufacturing capacity at Fab 4 until sometime in 2009.
