Zoran Corp. has announced the SupraTV 160 family of highly integrated processors for digital TV (DTV) and STB systems. Combined with SiliconSoftware solution, these processors promise all the key features required for designing terrestrial, satellite and cable STBs as well as integrated DTV for the European market.

Advanced features of these new devices enable manufacturers to offer highly differentiated products even in cost-sensitive markets. These features include digital video recording hardware and software, two-slot common interface modules, MHEG-5 for the UK terrestrial market, advanced security and USB 1.1 for software updates as well as MP3 and JPEG file decoding.

"Our goal for the SupraTV 160 family of products is to enable our customers to offer a range of highly differentiated products based on a single platform. We are delighted that STBs based on our SupraTV processors are now in production from leading manufacturers of satellite and terrestrial STBs for Europe and the Middle East," said Ram Ofir, senior VP and general manager at Zoran's home entertainment division.

Key features
The new processor family integrates a MIPS32 CPU complete with a memory management unit that supports various features. Among these are 16- and 32bit SDRAM, programmable multistream transport demultiplexer with conditional access, flexible audio DSP supporting MPEG, MP3 and WMA audio standards.

The memory unit supports MPEG video decoder, high quality video scalar with an advanced 2D graphics engine, digital video encoder, audio DAC, digital timing oscillator, and smart card protection and control functions. A programmable guest bus enables glueless connection to hard drives or peripheral devices including Common Interface and Ethernet ICs, and is used in conjunction with other features for low system cost of DVB-CIM and digital video recording.

"Zoran's SupraTV 140 processor has worked well for Grundig's current families of entry, mid-range and digital video recorders for the European satellite and terrestrial markets. We welcome the opportunity to use Zoran's new SupraTV 160 processors to provide additional key features such as common interface modules for viewing encrypted content and playback of external media files enabled by the new USB interface," said Horst Janssen, product director for digital reception at Grundig.
