SFP connectors, cages tailored for Ethernet networking

Keywords:SFP connector? E81? Pulse? Technitrol? small form factor pluggable connector?

The new line of small form factor pluggable (SFP) connectors and cages from Pulse, a Technitrol Company, is designed for use in Ethernet networking applications such as blade servers, routers and add/drop multiplexers. The SFP system handles speeds up to 5Gbits and maintains temperatures below 70C.

The E81 SFP series can handle optical transceiver links as well as transceivers configured to operate as traditional copper RJ45 connectors, enabling the series to be configured to each company's internal networking requirements for balancing load and bandwidth. The cages handle speeds up to 5 gigabits and improve connectivity in high-density PCB environments.

Available in through-hole and press-fit applications, the SFP cages are uniquely constructed so they won't deform during press fitting and have tight tolerances so they can stack and mate for good transceiver connections and fit on the printed-circuit-board. The cages are said to reduce the operating temperature of the transceiver, prevent the transceiver from emitting electromagnetic interference, and provide mechanical stability. The connector also allows for easy plug-in of the transceiver.

The cage is made of copper alloy with nickel plating which prevents oxidation. Holes in the cage allow air circulation and heat transfer to ensure that the transceiver temperature remain at less than 70C.

The cages come in three sizes: a 2x1, measuring 25.50(h)-by-63.25(d)-by-14.50mm(w), a 1x1, which measures 9.45(h)-by-48.80(d)-by-14.75(w), and a 1x4, which measures 9.20(h)-by-48.97(d)-by-57.25(w). All connections are press fit, with a 1x1 available in a through-hole configuration. Custom configurations are available. The SFP system has a side entry mount and is RoHS compliant.

The cage and connector are available separately or as a set, except in the 2x1 series, in which the connector is built in. Prices for the set are $2 per SFP port for 1x4 and 1x1 solutions and $8.00 for the combined 2x1 SFP cage and connector solution for quantities of 10,000. Delivery is four to six weeks. Individual part pricing may vary due to order configuration and shipping destination.

Pulse plans to expand the SFP product line to include a 2xN series, with or without light pipes, and a lower profile advanced telecom computing architecture (ATCA) 2xN solution with maximum height of 18mm which accepts industry standard SFP optical and copper transceivers.
