More than 275 million units of main displays and 60.7 million units of sub-displays were shipped during Q2, according to the latest phone shipment report from DisplaySearch. The display market research and consulting firm also reported that quarter-to-quarter shipment was flat, but year-to-year shipment grew by 32 percent.
Meanwhile, active-matrix displays are now more than 53.7 percent of the total shipments, up from 41.7 percent a year ago. DisplaySearch said that this trend is expected to continue, and that by Q4 2006, the share of active-matrix display will be up to 60.4 percent. Additionally, color displays now represent 84.5 percent of the total display shipment.
The Quarterly Mobile Phone Shipment and Forecast Report from DisplaySearch lists Samsung SDI, Philips, Sanyo Epson, Sharp and Wintek as the leading mobile phone makers in terms of shipments, with market shares of 16.3-, 11.7-, 11.1-, 9.4- and 7.9 percent, respectively.
"Mobile phone display revenue continues to contract due to the 20 percent y-o-y drop in ASPs, even as the industry continues to shift to active-matrix displays with larger average sizes. However, we expect the ASP reduction to moderate in the next few quarters, allowing revenues to grow with the increase in shipment volume," shared Barry Young, senior vice president, DisplaySearch.
