IMS Research recently reported that Infineon Technologies AG's power semiconductor business outperformed the global market, which expanded by 0.6 percent to $11.35 billion, and achieved a revenue growth of 11.6 percent in 2005.

The U.K.-headquartered market research firm reported that Infineon's sales revenue in this market rose to $1.06 billion from approximately $950 million in 2004. IMS Research also said that Infineon held a 9.3 percent share of the total $11.35 billion market last year.

The power semiconductor market will grow at an average annual rate of 6 to 8 percent over the next five years, forecasted IMS Research. This market is driven by the global trend for continued electrical energy demand and declining natural resources.

Last week, Infineon formally opened its first Asia-based front-end power fab in Kulim, Malaysia. Employing about 1,700 people, the $1 billion facility, dubbed Power Fab, will have a maximum capacity of 100,000 wafer starts per month using 200mm wafer discs.
