Shin-Etsu to increase capacity to 1 million wafers/month

Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. Ltd announced its plan to expand its monthly production of 300mm silicon wafers to 1 million by Q4 2007 to meet the rapidly growing market demand Construction to expand facilities has already started.

The company implemented its first plan to expand total production capacity of 300mm silicon wafer to 500,000 per month and completed this before the target schedule. However, continuous robust demand for silicon wafer led the company to increase monthly production to 700,000. After further consideration that semiconductor customers are expected to develop or expand production lines using 300mm wafers, the company again decided have a major expansion on its monthly production to 1 million wafers. This expanded production capacity will cost Shin-Etsu an investment of more than $1 billion.

Expansion will be carried out at Shin-Etsu Handotai's Shirakawa Plant in Japan, at Shin-Etsu Handotai America (SEH America) in Vancouver, Washington, and at Mimasu Semiconductor Industry Co. Ltd, which recently became a Shin-Etsu Group company.

In addition, Shin-Etsu will invest in Nagano Electronics Industrial Co. Ltd, another Shin-Etsu Group company.
