Silex Technology America Inc. has introduced a source-code-level software product for OEMs that combines Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) and Wi-Fi Protected Access/WPA2 encryption modules in one bundled security product called the Network Security Suite.

While authentication features in NSS follow the 802.1x-authentication model, Silex has included many varieties of the authentication algorithms, including Protected EAP, Cisco Lightweight EAP, Transport Layer Security and Tunneled TLS.

Keith Sugawara, general manager of the connectivity and wireless division at Silex, said the suite is offered in source-code format with open application programming interfaces that are non-specific to an underlying operating system. Thus, the software can be used with a variety of real-time kernels, as well as with networking products using Linux or Windows as an underlying environment.

The suite includes an operating system abstraction layer, which defines the OS-dependent hooks that should be implemented when porting to a target system.

The generic API included in the software suite queries the physical network drivers for the capabilities of the networks, the network operating mode used and the I/O specifics. An OS-independent API can request memory allocations and other OS-specific services. The security source code supports multiple contexts for devices with multiple network types.

Silex will provide porting and software support services. It also will license the software in a license-plus-device-royalty model for OEMs wishing to implement their own device ports.
