Several panel makers from Taiwan, including Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd (CPT), AU Optronics Corp. and Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp., are reportedly experiencing supply shortage of LCD driver ICs for the past few weeks and expect supply to further tighten this month.

According to industry sources, panel manufacturers have begun placing more orders from IC design houses this quarter due to seasonal demand. However, output has been insufficient due to the longer leadtimes for driver ICs, which take two to three months.

Sources believe panel maker CPT will be the most affected by the tight supply and will experience a shortage of at least 150,000 units of LCD driver ICs for 17inch panels this month. However, first-tier companies will be less affected by the market situation as they are more secure in their orders.

Meanwhile, panel prices are projected to hike up by 3 to 5 percent early this month, according to WitsView Technology.
