Silicon wafer shipments are expected to increase by 18 percent in 2006, reaching 7,811 million square inches, according to a recent survey conducted by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI).

Wafer shipments are projected to grow an additional 4 percent in 2007, 14 percent in 2008 and 5 percent in 2009, topping out at 9,764 million square inches, according to the survey of members of SEMI's Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG).

Total wafer shipments are expected to experience robust growth through the entire forecast period, with an average compound annual growth rate of more than 10 percent from 2005 to 2009, the survey found.

"We are currently seeing unprecedented demand, driven by the end market electronic applications," said Tatsuhiko Shigematsu, chairman of SMG and chief technology officer at SUMCO Corp. The silicon segment that is experiencing the greatest growth is 300mm, which is anticipated to be over 30 percent of total silicon volumes in 2007."
