CMD touts 'thinnest' EMI filters for portables
Keywords:CMD? Praetorian? Centurion? EMI filters? ESD protection?
California Micro Devices (CMD) has extended its family of packaged Praetorian and Centurion EMI filter ASIP devices that feature both EMI filtering and ESD protection in the thinnest and most compact packages available for use in mobile handsets.
The CM16xx series ASIP devices, which include the CM1690, CM1630, CM1631, CM1636 and CM1637 series, are available in 0.4mm pitch uDFN packages with a typical thickness of 0.50mm, which provides a space savings of up to 42 percent compared to existing 0.5mm pitch DFN packages.
The CM16xx series devices are pin-compatible Centurion RC and Praetorian LC architecture EMI filter ASIP devices. These devices are said to provide excellent attenuation in the frequency band from 800MHz to 3GHz. In addition, they are said to exhibit superior filter performance across all channels thanks to the large area ground pad on the bottom of the uDFN package which minimizes ground inductance.
The CM16xx series is backward compatible with CMD's previous offerings of 0.4mm pitch TDFNs as well as its competitors' offerings of TDFN and DFN packages, which means that engineers can significantly reduce the thickness of their mobile products without having to redesign their PC boards. Each of the new devices provides ESD protection up to 15kV contact discharge per IEC61000-4-2 Level 4 specification, which makes them suitable for virtually all mobile applications.
The Praetorian and Centurion uDFN product families are available in 4-, 6- and 8-channel configurations. The 4-channel devices require 42 percent less board space than competing filters using 0.5mm pitch TDFN packages. The 6-channel and 8-channel versions offer about a 30 percent space savings. The package dimensions of the 4-, 6- and 8-channel versions are: 1.7-by-1.35mm (8 leads), 2.5-by-1.35mm (12 leads) and 3.3-by-1.35mm (16 leads), respectively.
Sample pricing ranges between 32 cents and 61 cents each in quantities of 1,000 depending on channel configuration. They are only available in the Pb-free version.
