Sipex Corp. has announced two new advanced RS-232 transceiversSP3244E and SP3245Esaid to be the first to incorporate the Auto On-line Plus feature.

Auto On-line Plus is an advanced power saving function for standard RS-232 transceivers. A device with this feature can automatically enter a 1?A low-power mode if idle for longer than 30s, and can automatically wake upon detection of activity on its driver or receiver inputs. Such can significantly reduce power consumption in systems in which the serial port remains idle, the company said. It requires no intervention or modifications to device drivers or software.

"Lowering power consumption is very important to consumer applications, particularly those that operate from battery power or that need to meet Energy Star or other environmental standards," said George Dixon, director of interface marketing at Sipex.

The device operates up to 250Kbps data rates, while keeping driver outputs slew-controlled to less than 30V/s. The device is a high-speed serial device capable of up to 1Mbaud/s data rate. Both devices contain three drivers, five receivers, plus an additional non-inverted receiver output.

The transceivers implement all signals needed for a standard PC or terminal (DTE) serial port. Driver outputs and receiver inputs have built-in ESD protection up to 15kV,the IEC air-gap method. Moreover, the devices generate full RS-232/V.28 compliant driver outputs from a single 3.3V or 5V supply voltage using patented intelligent charge pump technology.

Both devices are available in SSOP-28 and TSSOP-28 Pb-free packaging and operate on 0 to 70C for commercial operations and -40C to 85C for industrial operations. A QFN-32 package will also be available shortly.

SP3244E is priced at 95 cents and SP3245E is priced at $1.05, both in 10,000-unit quantities.
