The NFC Forum released its SmartPoster record type definition (RTD) specification for digital content providers. The specification details how to create records for smart poster "tags," which store data that can be read by NFC-enabled devices.

Smart posters are printed materials such as posters, signs or magazine pages with data tags. NFC-enabled devices allow access to additional information stored in the tags, including current transportation schedules, discount coupons, movie clips, links to e-commerce sites for concert tickets and much more. Smart posters essentially allow retrieval of desired electronic information without creating unwanted or unsolicited electronic advertising.

ABI Research estimates that 450 million mobile handsets will be NFC-enabled in 2011.

In August, the NFC Forum released its first four specifications.

Meanwhile, modular NFC architecture and protocols for interoperable data exchange, device-independent service delivery, device discovery, and device capability that were released in June are still under development.

The Forum also announced in June the initial set of tag formats that all NFC Forum-compliant devices must support. Selected tags were based on ISO 14443 Type A and B standards and Sony's FeliCa.

NFC Forum
NFC Forum was launched as a non-profit industry association in 2004. Its aims to advance the use of NFC technology by developing specifications, ensuring interoperability among devices and services, and educating the market about NFC technology. To date, it has over 90 global members.

NFC technology is a short-range, standards-based wireless connectivity technology. It allows safe contactless transactions, access to digital content and single touch connection with electronic devices.
