SGA camera chip sensor targets 3G video phone market

OmniVision's SGA camera chip sensor

OmniVision Technologies Inc. has unveiled a high-performance Square Graphics Array (SGA) 400 x 400 resolution camera chip sensor. The OV6680 is aimed at secondary cameras in the 3G video phone market.

The OV6680 is said to offer excellent low-light performance and image quality in a compact 5-by-5-by-3mm module for a cost-effective solution. Low-light performance is especially critical in video conferencing applications because LCD screens rarely emit enough light (about 5lux) to compensate for the lighting conditions of most indoor environments, said the company.

Using the company's 3.6?m pixel with OmniPixel2 technology, the OV6680 operates at 30fps in SGA resolution with complete user control over image quality, formatting and output data. The 400-by-400pixel output enables image stabilization functions with post processing and all required image processing functions, such as exposure control, gamma, white balance, color saturation and hue control, which are also programmable through the serial camera control bus interface.

According to market research firms Strategy Analytics and Yankee Group the 3G handset market will reach 193 million units, or 25 percent of the total handsets sold worldwide this year. By 2009, 3G handsets are expected to comprise over 60 percent of total handset shipments worldwide, translating into more than 500 million 3G phones. Approximately 85 percent to 90 percent of the 3G phones are expected to have a secondary camera.

Available in CSP packaging, the OV6680 is currently available in sample quantities. Volume production is expected to start Q4 2006.
